Giorgio Agamben’s Letter to Ocalan: “You Are Freedom Itself”

Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben wrote a letter to Abdullah Ocalan who is still being kept on Imrali Island Prison after being abducted by NATO to Turkey in 1999.

The letter, delivered to the Imralı delegation, reads as follows:

Dear Abdullah Ocalan,

Years ago, when you were in Italy and the Italian authorities extradited you to Turkey, I wrote that I felt ashamed of my country. Today, before you and the Kurdish people, I once again feel ashamed on behalf of Italy and all of Europe.

Naturally, I join those calling for your release. However, in my eyes, even while you are in prison, you are free; you are freedom itself, which people seem to have forgotten.
