Leader Abdullah Ocalan has sent a letter from Imrali Island to the ‘Democratic Confederalism in Kurdistan’ conference which is being held in Turin, Italy.<\/p>\n
The conference, attended by Kurdish politicians, Italian parliamentarians, local government officials, academics, and representatives of the women\u2019s movement, is discussing a democratic solution to the Kurdish question and the prospects for peace in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
The letter is as follows:<\/p>\n
Dear friends,<\/p>\n
I greet you from \u0130mrali with feelings of international solidarity and freedom. I hope your conference will contribute to equality and freedom among peoples and the establishment of lasting peace in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
The Middle East is currently at a critical turning point. Wars, conflicts, nation-state solutions, and security-oriented policies have failed to bring peace and freedom to the peoples of the region. This is now clear. Therefore, our fundamental task is to abandon the politics of war, embrace democratic politics, organize society, and build a new era that guarantees the equal and free coexistence of peoples.<\/p>\n
Democratic confederalism and the perspective of a Democratic Republic are among the central issues in this search for a solution.<\/p>\n
The dissolution of the PKK and the end of its strategy of armed struggle should be seen as the beginning of a new era. This change also requires a new perspective on the issue.<\/p>\n
It must be stated clearly that the end of armed struggle does not, in itself, mean peace. For peace to become lasting at the end of this process, the root causes of the conflict must be eliminated, Kurdish identity, language, and culture must be guaranteed, obstacles to democratic politics must be removed, and equal citizenship must be secured by law.<\/p>\n
Democratic integration does not mean unilateral adaptation or unconditional participation in the existing system. On the contrary, it must be a democratic transformation in which differences are not denied, rights are recognized, and coexistence is established on the basis of equality.<\/p>\n
The political expression of democratic politics is the Democratic Republic, while the guarantee of a democratic society is the rule of law. Without legal guarantees, democratic politics cannot become sustainable, nor can the peace process succeed.<\/p>\n
The resolution of the Kurdish question cannot be considered separately from the democratization of Turkey. Likewise, Turkey\u2019s democratization is inseparable from the emergence of a political will that enables peoples to live together freely and equally.<\/p>\n
This is precisely where the significance of the democratic confederalism perspective for the Middle East lies. The solution is not to assimilate peoples into a single identity, turn borders and differences into sources of new conflicts, or create new forms of state domination.<\/p>\n
What is needed today is this: democratic politics instead of the politics of war, recognition instead of denial, law instead of coercion, and free and equal coexistence instead of social fragmentation. This transformation requires states and political actors to assume responsibility, democratic institutions to be strengthened, and society to have a voice and decision-making power over its own future.<\/p>\n

I hope this conference will discuss the perspective of democratic confederalism in the context of today\u2019s conditions and identify concrete paths toward a democratic solution.<\/p>\n
The future of the Middle East lies not in new wars or new forms of domination, but in building a democratic society. Liberation lies in the free unity of peoples and the strengthening of democratic politics.<\/p>\n
Politics must replace weapons, the rule of law must replace mistrust, and equality must replace denial. This is the path to lasting peace.<\/p>\n
Once again, I extend my greetings to your conference with my unwavering belief in peace and freedom.<\/p>\n
